Day of the Honeybee May 25 2013

On Saturday May 25 2013 the Kamloops bee club hosted a "Day of the Honeybee" at the Kamloops Farmer's Market. A section of downtown Kamloops is blocked off each Saturday seasonally. Local farmers and artisans set up booths and tables on the street and a nearby park and sell a wide range of produce, crafts, plants, and - of course - honey from a few of our local beekeepers. Once a year the Kamloops Bee Club sets up an education booth to promote local beekeeping and apiculture in general. We had crafts for the kids and honey tasting, and a bee-less hive that children could suite-up and take their hand at working at with hive tools. The club's observation hive was very popular with children and adults alike, and was a superb conversation starter. There was a lot of curiosity about the inner workings of a hive and the life cycle of bees. People showed awareness and concern for colony collapse disorder and the effects of neonicotinoid use on bees.
